Syria 3-1 Qatar: 2022 hosts fail to qualify for Russia 2018
Syria earned a crucial 3-1 victory over 2022 hosts Qatar, maintaining their hopes of qualifying for a first ever World Cup. Omar Khribin was left unmarked to power in Syria's opener on 7 minutes, but Ali Asadalla equalised for Qatar in the 35th minute from a set-piece. Khribin restored Syria's lead on 54 minutes, before Mahmoud Al Mawas made absolutely sure of the win deep into the 95th minute of stoppage time. Syria must beat Group A leaders Iran on their final match to be assured of at least a third-place playoff spot, while bottom-placed Qatar are out of the equation.
